Rice Krispies  #TreatsForToys

It’s official!  With the radio blasting our favourite festive tunes and malls spilling with shoppers, the holiday season is well underways! But between hustle and bustle of the holiday season, there are still many families right here in Canada that will be struggling to provide their children with a gift to unwrap.

How We Can Help

For the fifth annual year, Rice Krispies is encouraging all of us Canadians to fire up our stoves and make a Rice Krispies toy-shaped treat. By posting your gooey masterpiece on social media or on TreatsForToys.ca with #TreatsForToys, Rice Krispies will donate $20 to The Salvation Army to buy a real toy for a child in need.

Get the Kids Involved!

This mom knows how valuable it is to get the kids in the kitchen to be creative and make lasting memories. Making your Rice Krispies toy-shaped treats together will let you teach your children about the importance of giving back to the less fortunate while also letting their imaginations run wild with sprinkles and icing. The best part? You get a delicious treat when it’s all done!

Before We Get to Baking

There’s a fun new challenge that the folks at Rice Krispies have tasked us with for this year: incorporate a moving part to your toy-shaped treat! I was inspired with skates, but maybe I’ll try my luck with the challenge on my next treat. Take a look at the first of my very own #TreatsForToys:

INGREDIENTS:

  • ·         ¼ cup of margarine or butter
  • ·         1 pkg of regular marshmallows
  • ·         ½ vanilla extract
  • ·         6 cups of Rice Krispies* cereal  (you can use Kellogg’s Holiday Rice Krispies, Rice Krispies Original cereal, Rice Krispies with Vanilla Flavour
  • ·         Coloured icing of your choice
  • ·         Assorted candies of your choice
  • ·         Licorice strings
  • ·         Two large candy canes

PREPERATION:

  • ·         Melt the margarine in a large saucepan over low heat.
  • ·         Add the marshmallows, stir until melted. Remove from heat.
  • ·         Add the remaining ingredients. Stir until well coated
  • ·         Remove from heat and press mixture into greased pan approximately 1.5 inches thick.
  • ·         Once cool, cut out the shape of two skates and four small rectangles.
  • ·         Attach two small rectangles to the bottom of each skate using icing. Attach one candy cane to the bottom of the rectangles on each skate using icing.
  • ·         Decorate your skates using coloured icing and candies of your choice. Don’t forget to lace up with licorice strings!
